Softball Camps

Fall 2014 Creighton Softball Hitting Leagues

Sundays: November 9th, 16th, 23rd and 30th   (4 weeks)
Session 1: 1:00–2:30 pm (Ages 14 & Up)
Session 2: 3:00–4:30 pm (Ages 8-13)

The Creighton Softball Fall Hitting League is designed to help further develop softball players that are interested in enhancing their offensive hitting skills. The League runs for four weeks and is supervised by the Creighton University Softball coaching staff and players.  

Each session will be broken into two main parts; an instructional period and a competitive period.  The instructional period will focus on teaching the fundamentals of a consistent, balanced, and powerful swing through the use of drill work, along with zone awareness and situational hitting. 

The competitive session will allow players to apply their skills in a fun and competitive environment.  Players accumulate points by hitting designated areas throughout the cage and by performing situational hitting successfully (bunts, hit and runs, opposite field hitting, etc.).

Location: Creighton’s indoor hitting facility located in the Kitty Gaughan Pavilion adjacent to the baseball and softball fields located on 22nd and Burt. 

Cost: $95.00 per hitter. Fee includes the cost of the four-week session, as well as a camp t-shirt.

Equipment: Each hitter is responsible for bringing their own bat, helmet and, if used, batting gloves. Tennis shoes can be worn in the hitting facility.

Registration: All campers must have a registration and parental consent form on file prior to participating.  Registration will take place in the Kitty Gaughan Pavilion prior to the start of the first week of camp.

CAMP OVERVIEW: The Creighton Softball coaching staff would like to invite you to our 2014 Winter Softball Camps. These camps provide an opportunity for players of all ages to learn and develop their skills under the personal attention of the Bluejay softball staff. Fundamentals will be emphasized through individual and group instruction combined with drill work to help each player become the best she can be. 

Ages 8-13

Junior Jays Hitting Camp                        $55

December 30       9:30 – 11:30 a.m.

Instruction will focus on teaching players the proper swing mechanics to promote bat speed and consistency at the plate. Each player will go through a variety of supervised hitting stations to reinforce concepts being taught. Campers should provide their own helmet and bat.

            *Location:  Kitty Gaughan Pavilion

Junior Jays Fundamental Camp              $55 

December 30     1-3:30 p.m.

Camp includes proper method of warm-up with strong emphasis on throwing and receiving fundamentals.  Fielding mechanics and base running will both be addressed through extensive drill work.

            *Location:  Rasmussen Center

Ages 14 & up

Senior Jays Hitting 1 - Fundamentals     $55

December 28          9:30 – 11:30 a.m.

Senior Jays Hitting 2 - Slapping/Short Game $55

December 28      1 - 3:30 p.m.

Camp includes right- and left-hand slapping as well as short game fundamentals. Situational bunting including sacrifice, surprise, triple bunt,, squeeze, and slapping will be taught through drill work, machine work, and live arm. Campers should provide their own helmet and bat.

Senior Jays Defense 1 - Fundamentals          $55  

December 29       9:30 – 11:30 a.m. 

Camp includes proper method of warm-up with strong emphasis on throwing and receiving fundamentals. Fielding mechanics and base running will all be addressed through extensive and more challenging drill work.

                  *Location:  Rasmussen Center

Senior Jays Defense 2 - Positional Play           $55

December 29       1 - 3:30 p.m.

Instruction will focus on position-specific techniques. Players will be divided so outfield, infield corner and middle, pitcher, and catcher mechanics can be addressed. In addition, situational instruction will be incorporated.

                  *Location:  Rasmussen Center

GENERAL INFORMATION

FACILITIES: Creighton’s indoor hitting facility located in the Kitty Gaughan Pavilion adjacent to the baseball and softball fields located on 22nd and Burt will be the site for all hitting camps. The Rasmussen Center located on 18th and Burt St. will be the location for the Junior and Senior Jays’ Defensive clinics. Lunch will NOT be provided. However, campers can bring their lunch and dine in these facilities in between camps.

EQUIPMENT: Campers should bring their own bat and helmet for the hitting camps and glove for the fundamentals along with comfortable workout attire. You can wear tennis shoes in all of our indoor facilities and cleats are allowed in the Rasmussen Center. 

HEALTH CARE: All campers must carry their own insurance. Creighton Softball Camp and Creighton University cannot be responsible for injuries sustained at the camp.

REGISTRATION: All campers must have a registration and parental consent form on file prior to participating. Registration will take place in the Kitty Gaughan Pavilion for hitting camps and at the Rasmussen Center for defensive camps.

Each camper will receive a Creighton Softball T-shirt (one shirt per camper for the week)!

CAMP INSTRUCTORS

Brent Vigness
Head Coach

Brent Vigness is in his 22nd season as the head coach of the Creighton Softball Team and owns a record of 664-470-3. The 2013, 2008, 2007 and 1998 MVC Coach of the Year has guided the Bluejays to seven regular season conference titles, and six MVC Tournament titles as well as seven berths to the NCAA Tournament. 

Vigness led Creighton to the BIG EAST Tournament Semifinals in the Bluejays’ inaugural year in the league. The Jays won three straight regular season conference championships from 2007-09 and have made five NCAA Regional Tournament appearances over the last 10 years. CU compiled two straight 40-plus win seasons in 2008 and 2007 while earning an MVC Tournament Championship.

Under Vigness, the Bluejay softball team was the winningest team in the Missouri Valley Conference over their last ten seasons in the conference. The Bluejays are tied for most consecutive conference tournament championships with three. In 2010, the Bluejays again broke records in team and individual homeruns (season), and individual RBI, runs, total bases, walks, HBP, and sacs as well as pitching records (season and career) in wins, strike outs, appearances, starts, complete games and innings.

Jami Strinz- Penner
Assistant Coach

Jami Strinz-Penner, is in her first year as an assistant coach. After competing at Bradley University 1998-2001, Strinz-Penner continued her playing career as a member of Ireland’s National Team and in the Italian Professional Softball League with the Langhirno Caggiati until 2005.

A native of Pleasant Hill, Oregon, Strinz-Penner is in her eighth season as a college coach, where she has focused primarily on developing pitchers. Most recently, she served as the head coach of the Blaze Gold travel softball team based out of Beaverton, Oregon, where she also provided private hitting and pitching instruction to players from Oregon and Washington.

During her playing career at Bradley, Strinz-Penner led the Braves in wins, strikeouts and innings pitched. She is a current member of the National Fastpitch Coaches Association, the National Association of Collegiate Woman Athletic Administrators and the Alliance of Woman Coaches.

Jami works primarily with pitchers and catchers.

Renae Sinkler
Assistant Coach

Renae Sinkler is in her fourth year as an assistant coach.  She served as the volunteer assistant coach in 2011 after a record setting career as a Bluejay, playing from 2007-2010. Throughout her career, Renae started at first base, left field, shortstop, and designated hitter. This two-time MVC Player of the Year and three-time All MVC earned Third Team All-American honors in 2010 and was named National Player of the Week on April 14, 2008. 

Sinkler holds Bluejay single-season records for home runs, RBI, total bases and runs scored. She also ranks second all-time in the Creighton career record book for home runs, RBI, and total bases.

Renae works primarily with outfielders and infielders.
