OMAHA, Neb. -- Creighton sophomore point guard Antoine Young is this week’s State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Co-Player of the Week. Young shares his award with Evansville sophomore James Haarsma.
This is Young’s first recognition of the season. Last year he was named to the MVC’s All-Bench Team.
Young entered the week with career-highs of 15 points, six assists and four rebounds, but averaged 17.0 points, 5.5 assists, 3.5 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game as Creighton won a pair of games to extend its league-record streak of 10-win conference seasons to 14 straight.
Young opened the week with a career-high 22 points in an overtime road win at Southern Illinois. He scored 18 of his points after intermission, including six of CU’s final eight points in overtime. He added three assists and two rebounds in the win.
He then had 12 points to go with career-highs of eight assists and five rebounds in Creighton’s 82-71 win over Bradley on Saturday.
The Bellevue (Neb.) West product entered the week shooting 48.4 percent from the free throw line this season (31-64) but made 92.3 percent of his attempts (12-13) last week.
He leads Creighton in assists (87) and steals (23) this season, and his 2.67 assist/turnover ratio in league play leads the MVC.
Fourth-seeded Creighton (16-14) opens the State Farm MVC Tournament on Friday when it plays fifth-seeded Bradley (15-14) in a 2:30 pm quarterfinal game in St. Louis, Mo.
