SEATTLE, Wash. - Ethan Finlay scored in the 25th minute and the 17th-ranked Creighton men's soccer team defeated Washington 1-0 Friday night at the Husky Fever Classic.  The Bluejays improve to 2-1-1 on the year with their third shutout in four matches, while they are now unbeaten in their last 12 matches (10-0-2) against teams from the West Coast.

Creighton established the flow of the match early on, not only scoring in the opening half but controlling play in the opening 45 minutes.  Finlay scored on CU's sixth shot of the opening half, placing his shot into the upper right 90 for his first goal of the year.  The sophomore, who led the Missouri Valley Conference with four game-winning goals last year, now has five career-game winners among his seven career goals.  Thomas Gjoesund, who earned his first start of the season on Friday, was credited with an assist on the score.

"That was a great win and we needed it," said head coach Bob Warming after the victory.  "We won the first half and had them on the ropes.  Ethan's header off the crossbar and some very good attacking movements really had him deserving the goal.  Thomas (Gjoesund) did well in traffic to keep the ball on target for Ethan's rebound goal.  The second half, Washington had us on our heels, but I was really proud of our team defending.  Portland can really play and it's going to be a big challenge for us on Sunday."

After out-shooting the Huskies (2-4-1) 7-2 in the opening half, the Huskies put on the pressure in the second half, with the final shot count in favor of the Bluejays reading 10-8.

Sophomore goalkeeper Brian Holt stopped one shot in his third shutout of the season.  He now owns 15 career shutouts in 23 career starts.  Holt again benefitted from outstanding team defense as the team now owns a 0.24 goals against average on the year.

The Bluejays conclude play at the Husky Fever Classic with a noon (CST) match against Portland in Seattle on Sunday.

NOTES:  Joining Gjoesund in making their first starts of the season were Josh Moran and Andrew Duran ... CU is now 5-2-0 all-time against Washington, including a 2-1-0 mark in Seattle ... The Jays have not lost to a team from the Pacific Time Zone since the final match of the 2006 season, a 3-0 loss at Washington, as they have gone 10-0-2 against West Coast teams since.
